
Topic: Understanding Mobility from the Gait Lab to Everyday Life

Dr Godfrey will explore how advances in wearable and digital technologies are transforming the assessment of physical capability, with a focus on gait. It will compare traditional laboratory-based assessments with emerging approaches that enable continuous measurement in real-world environments.
The session will highlight the use of wearable sensors, smartphone technologies, and complementary contextual data to provide a more comprehensive understanding of mobility, functional performance, and fall risk. Practical examples from research involving older adults and people with Parkinson's disease will demonstrate how these technologies can support clinical decision-making, personalised interventions, and future models of digital healthcare.
Presenter Biography:
Dr Godfrey is a digital health-based researcher. He was lead for his Departments/Schools Digital Health & Wellbeing research group (2020-2026) and was UoA11 Deputy lead for REF2021. He is Head of Degree Apprenticeships for his School. He received his BEng in electronic engineering and PhD in biomedical electronics from the University of Limerick, Ireland. He also holds an MBA from Newcastle University. His major research interests are in wearable technology and algorithms for data science and analytics in healthcare. This includes areas of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data mining, and multidimensional signal processing. He has published roughly 200 papers on those topics in various engineering and medical journals from a portfolio of translational-based research. He serves as Deputy Editor for each of the following journals: NPI/Nature Digital Medicine, Maturitas and the Journal of NeuroEngineering & Rehabilitation. He was previously an International Advisory board member for Physiological Measurement. Dr Godfrey is a Member of the Institution of Engineering Technology (MIET) and Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (SMIEEE). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). He is an Honorary Researcher with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
