Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

Severe Typhoon "Bavi" continues to approach Taiwan. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) estimates that a sea typhoon warning will be issued as early as tomorrow daytime (the 9th), followed by a land typhoon warning between late tomorrow night and early Friday morning (the 10th). Weather expert Wu Der-rong notes that the center of Typhoon Bavi will pass near the waters off northeastern Taiwan on Saturday (the 11th). The forecast uncertainty has decreased, and the storm's radius is expected to cover Miyako Island and half of Taiwan. Bavi will maintain its strength as a large, severe typhoon as it approaches, posing a serious threat of destructive wind and rain.

Latest weather models show that the typhoon will impact Taiwan this Friday and Saturday (the 10th and 11th). Wind and rain will intensify across the island late Friday evening, leading to severe storms on Saturday. Central and northern Taiwan, along with all mountainous areas, must prepare for destructive winds and catastrophic heavy rainfall. The wind and rain on the main island will begin to ease starting Saturday night.

From Sunday to next Friday (the 12th to 16th), Bavi will move away. However, southerly winds and residual moisture will keep the weather unstable, bringing occasional local showers and frequent afternoon thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, strong winds, and sudden downpours.

All faculty, staff, and students are advised to ensure that all doors and windows are securely closed before leaving the campus. Please make necessary disaster-prevention preparations in offices, laboratories, research areas, and low-lying locations (“A bit more preparation, a bit less damage”). Sandbags are available at the Office of General Affairs, located on the 2nd basement level of the International Building (IB) (see location map below). As the quantity is limited, please take only what you need. After the typhoon, kindly return the sandbags to their original location. Thank you for your cooperation.

Due to the peripheral circulation of the typhoon, strong gusts are likely to occur in northern regions. During the typhoon period, all teachers and students are advised not to stay under trees on campus to avoid potential safety hazards caused by falling trees.

During the typhoon’s approach, to prevent flooding caused by insufficient drainage, the school will close the floodgates at vehicle and motorcycle entrances/exits as needed, depending on rainfall and drainage conditions. When closed, vehicles will not be able to enter or leave the campus. Please take note and understand any inconvenience caused.

If it is absolutely necessary to drive or ride during the typhoon, please slow down and drive carefully. Vehicles should not be parked in low-lying areas or outside levees to avoid flood damage. All faculty, staff, and students are reminded to stay alert and prioritize traffic safety.
