Dear faculty, staff, and students,
The Central Weather Bureau has indicated that Typhoon KONG-REY, the 21st typhoon of the year and currently a severe typhoon, is being closely monitored. Data currently shows a high likelihood of it making landfall in Taiwan. Preparations for typhoon conditions are advised, and it is important to stay updated with the latest forecasts.
As of 5:30 AM today, both sea and land typhoon warnings have been issued. Over the next two days, the warning areas are expected to cover the entire island. Currently, the typhoon’s center is located southeast of Eluanbi, moving northwest. Its storm circle is gradually entering the Bashi Channel, posing a threat to Taitung and the Hengchun Peninsula. The typhoon has been intensifying over the past few hours, and it is predicted that the most significant impact on Taiwan will occur from tonight through early Friday morning. Please stay on high alert during this period.
Preparations and precautions: The typhoon is forecasted to make direct landfall. We request that all faculty, staff, and students ensure that windows and doors are securely closed before leaving the campus. Also, please take preventive measures in offices, laboratories, research areas, and low-lying areas to minimize potential damage (better preparation means less risk of typhoon damage). The General Affairs Office has sandbags available on the B2 level of the International Building (IB) (location marked on the attached image). Due to limited supply, please only take what you need, and kindly return the sandbags after the typhoon.
The peripheral circulation of the typhoon may cause strong gusts in northern areas. For safety, please avoid staying under trees on campus to reduce the risk of falling branches.
During the typhoon, to prevent flooding from heavy rains, the school may close the water gates at the vehicle entrances and exits as necessary. Vehicle access may be restricted during this period; we apologize for any inconvenience.
If you must drive or ride outside during the typhoon, please proceed cautiously and avoid parking in low-lying areas or beyond levees to prevent water damage. All faculty, staff, and students are urged to prioritize safety on the roads.
