AI Tools in the Writing Class

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered writing assistants like ChatGPT, Quillbot and WordTune are now becoming mainstream. These tools can easily be used to generate text, including full essays. In this workshop-style presentation, Prof. Overstreet will discuss some common AI tools and the impact they might have on writing processes and writing instruction. He will also suggest some possible approaches writing teachers might take towards these tools. Should we try to create writing prompts that can "outsmart" AI tools? Should we ban their use? Or should we attempt to teach students how to use such tools responsibly? Attendees will have a chance to consider these and other important questions.
